Candidates to address questions at forum

Incumbent Jay Paul and Jerry Wayne Loggans are running for the position of chairman of the Oglethorpe County Board of Commissioners.

Commission Chair Jay Paul, Sheriff David Gabriel and state representative Trey Rhodes are among the elected officials and candidates who have committed to participate in the candidate forum at the Historic Crawford Depot on Thursday, April 18.

 

A meet and greet will start at 5:30 p.m., followed by the forum at 6 p.m.

 

The forum, which will be moderated by Dink NeSmith, is sponsored by the Oglethorpe County Chamber of Commerce and The Oglethorpe Echo.

 

Other officials and candidates confirmed to attend, as of 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, include:

Ground rules have been set to make sure the forum is conducted in an orderly fashion. They include:

 

  • Attendees will be permitted to submit questions in advance. 
  • Questions will be screened for relevance, to avoid duplication and to assure adherence to the guidelines. 
  • Personal questions or attacks on any candidate will not be acknowledged.
  • If a question is directed to a specific candidate, it must be issue-focused. The candidate will have 2 minutes to respond.
  • All other candidates may have an opportunity to respond, if they desire. They will have 2 minutes.
  • If a question is directed to all candidates, each candidate will have up to 2 minutes to respond.
  • Verbal interaction between the audience and the candidates will not be permitted. The forum is neutral territory for a sharing of philosophy, ideas and information, not campaigning.

A candidate meet and greet is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. Monday, April 29 at the Farm Bureau.
