Meet new Superintendent Phillip Powell at The Patriot Porch from 9-10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22 at the OCHS cafeteria. Coffee, doughnuts and pastries will be provided.
Superintendent Phillip Powell will host The Patriot Porch program from 9-10 a.m. Saturday Aug. 22 at the Oglethorpe County High School cafeteria.
The event will serve as an open house for community members, parents and stakeholders to learn about Powell’s vision for the school system and ask questions directly to the new superintendent.
“I think transparency with stakeholders is important,” Powell said. “It’ll involve not just me delivering, but also an open question and answer session that I anticipate will focus on a lot of community concerns.”
Board of Education Chair Becky Soto said the event is different from previous community events held by the school system.
“I don’t believe there has ever been an event exactly like this one,” she said. “We have held community listening sessions. We have held some different events for the community to come together to get feedback, but I believe this specific event type is new to our community.”
Powell plans to continue hosting events like The Patriot Porch throughout his tenure, with a goal of scheduling them twice a year. He said it will help the community drive the conversation by sharing their feedback.
Soto will introduce Powell at the beginning of the program before he opens the floor to questions.
Powell anticipates attendees will ask questions about transparency, fiscal responsibility, taxes and the support available to students.
He said the event is an opportunity for community members to get to know him better.
“I think anytime that people can hear and see what you believe and what you’re about, they get a feel for a person and understand that I’m truly dedicated to doing what’s best for their kids,” Powell said.
