Aaaaaah choooo!

It’s springtime in Oglethorpe County and the pollen has us sneezing. It’s also a busy time of year. Here are our thumbs thoughts on what’s going on.

Thumbs up for mowing and safety

We know it’s spring when we see the county’s fleet of orange tractors along the roads. With all the rain, the grass is jumping into high gear. So is the mowing crew.

Public works Director Adam Nation said it takes 20 days for the mowers to cover 500 miles of roadways.

And that trip is repeated three times each year.

Here’s a thumbs up to good-looking roads and cautious driving to make it safe for the mowing crew.

Thumbs up for voter involvement

Unless you’ve been snoozing with Rip Van Winkle, you know this spring is also campaign season. While national politics is cranking up, voters are also paying close attention to what’s on the local ballot.

Two public upcoming forums will give county voters a chance to interact with the candidates and ask questions.

Make sure to attend today’s political forum, sponsored by the chamber of commerce and The Oglethorpe Echo. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. at Crawford’s Historic Depot. The session begins at 6.

And on Monday, April 29, the Farm Bureau will host an informal meet and greet from 6-8 p.m.

Thumbs up to both opportunities for voters to become well acquainted with the candidates. We encourage you to attend both.

The more you know, the better choices you can make in the voting booth.

Thumbs up for tire amnesty

Do you have tires littering your property? If so, here’s a good time to get rid of them for free.

That’s right, the landfill is conducting a tire amnesty event this Friday and Saturday. But you must prove residency in Oglethorpe County. On April 19, the hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. On April 20, the landfill hours are 8-11:45 a.m.

Note that the tires must be rim-free.

So, we give a thumbs up for the chance to clean up clutter and remove mosquito-nesting debris.

Thumbs up to juniors, seniors

Spring is an action-packed time of year, especially for Oglethorpe County schools. Saturday night, juniors and seniors will get a break from books, sports and other activities. It’s prom time at Oglethorpe County High School.

Thumbs up to a night for fun and celebration. But also, here’s to an evening of responsible behavior and safe driving.
