Editorial: What were they thinking?

One of Oglethorpe County’s most beautiful assets is its geography. The rolling hills, the forests and the wide-open spaces are treasures. Considerable efforts — public and private — are made to be good stewards of these assets.

That’s a plus.

Now, take a look at this photo. That’s a negative.

An abandoned granite quarry on Allgood Road has been used as an illegal trash and garbage dump.

Disgusting.

You wonder what these litterers were thinking when they tossed their rubbish into the water.

We have that answer.

They weren’t thinking about their individual responsibilities to help keep Oglethorpe County clean and beautiful.

We hope the culprits are caught. And when they are, we’ve thought of these suggestions.

  • Enforce the full extent of the fines outlined in the county’s illegal dumping ordinance.
  • Issue life jackets to the lawbreakers.
  • Have deputies supervise them as they swim around in the nasty water to retrieve what they dumped.

Just a fine isn’t enough. And maybe they will think before dumping next time.
