Diane Snow and her daughter, Danielle, view Oglethorpe County's recreation volleyball program as beneficial for Danielle’s daughter, Bella.
Upon discovering the program on the recreation department's Facebook page, they, both having volleyball experience, were eager to enroll Bella in the inaugural season for the 8u program.
“I feel like they got something for the little kids because really all they have is baseball or basketball. It’s a good start for volleyball,” Snow said.
Snow applauded the inaugural success of the 8u team, highlighting the dedication of both coaches, Courtney Wheless and Kristin Young. She noted the impartial treatment of players, despite Wheless having a daughter on the team.
Snow observed that Bella has enhanced her listening skills and is improving her ability to share her turn in various situations, both on and off the court.
“I think it’s helped her a little bit with discipline because she listens to the coach,” Snow said. “For me as her grandmother, I'm proud of her finishing out the year without having any fit and wanting to quit. That’s big for Bella.”
Wheless and her team won the championship game with a victory over Madison County on Saturday. They finished 7-1.
Young played volleyball in high school and recognized the need for more girls sports in the county. This prompted her desire to help initiate a volleyball program.
The teams underwent a draft evaluation and were divided to form two evenly matched teams.
Young described the joy of seeing the girls’ excitement as they achieve their goals and overcome obstacles. She emphasized that their regular-season victories are celebrated as if they’ve won a World Series.
“I hope they learn that sports are way more than just talent,” Young said. “The way they treat each other on and off the court has a huge impact on the outcome of each game.”
