The Oglethorpe County Athletic Booster Club started planning for its annual powerball event during its final meeting of the year on Dec. 4 at Oglethorpe County High School.
The powerball drawing, set for April 13, allows county residents over the age of 21 to purchase tickets for a dinner that features prize drawings. Last year’s grand prize was $10,000.
Last year’s event was held at American Legion Post 123, but the group is considering other locations, including a 10-acre lot on Bunker Hill Road. Potential sponsorships, vendors and other details are still pending.
The booster club’s balance is $177,000 with approximately $74,000 of that reserved for the “general fund” to support all sports. The remaining funds are distributed between each sport based on the amount of money each sport raises and spends.
The club also discussed other events, such as a “squares” event during the Super Bowl, paired with a watch party with giveaways and an auction, or a golf tournament in the spring.
“We still don’t know if we have the feasibility to do that or enough interested members to take that on,” booster club treasurer Joyce Sniff said.
Members also discussed an approximately $300 shortfall for new basketball cheer uniforms. This was due to a miscalculation of candy costs during the team’s fundraiser, where the cost was to be split between the fundraiser and the booster club.
The booster club allowed the team to dip into the negative to pay for new uniforms, and Sniff said she spoke to the coach, who was aware of the issue and said it would be quickly rectified.
