Defensive line builds chemistry, depth

Oglethorpe County’s defensive line enters this season focused on chemistry and understanding how each player’s role affects the rest of the defense.

“They’ve really jelled and really come together and they understand their job in the defense,” coach Mike Holland said.

The Patriots were still working through various combinations after their first scrimmage, as Holland continues to evaluate players and determine the best rotation for the season.

Holland said senior Sam Bell could be an immediate contributor with his size to the defensive line and is competing for time as nose guard. Bell has not played for the Patriots before.

“Even if he is that big as a nose guard, you get double teamed,” Holland said. “Even a big guy, getting double teamed, if you’re high you’re gonna get moved.”

Junior Coleton Sexton, who played guard last season, will also see time on the defensive line. Holland said his athleticism and experience will help the group while allowing him to stay fresh by playing on both sides of the ball.

Junior Zayveon Stribling, who didn’t play last season, will add depth, while Brett Leidberg returns after a season-ending injury last fall.

Sophomore Kayden Phelps is also competing for time at nose guard after his first season on the JV team.

Holland said the defensive ends’ athleticism is another strength while the group continues to learn how its performance affects the linebackers.

“I think their biggest strength is once we decide on a rotation, I definitely think those guys are gonna play together and play off of each other," Holland said.
