OCHS volleyball wins state championship

CARTERSVILLE — The Class A state volleyball title belongs to Oglethorpe County.

The Lady Patriots defeated Bremen 3-1 on Wednesday to capture their first volleyball state championship. After losing the first set, the Patriots battled back, taking the next three sets for the win at LakePoint Sports Complex.

The scores were 24-26, 25-22, 29-27 and 25-20.

Elizabeth Cook was the tournament MVP and Leanna Newton was named player of the game.

“I’m very thankful. I have also worked very hard. I’ve done all these amazing things. I’ve pushed myself so hard at open gyms, at weightlifting, all the things,” Cook said. “I definitely feel like I earned it.”

The third-seeded Patriots finished 32-8, winning their final 21 matches in a row. Bremen, which was the top seed, finished 36-8.

“We made mistakes, so we were talking about, how do we clean up those mistakes?” Oglethorpe County coach Brianne Harrison said. “It mostly comes down to passing. That’s our focus, is passing.”

Oglethorpe County School District Superintendent Beverly Levine and an estimated 160 OCHS fans were in attendance. The school brought three buses.

“This is so exciting,” Levine said. “Just so proud for our players, our coaches. It’s a very exciting day.”
