Pass brothers bring DB talent, experience

Senior Nicah Pass returns as a three-year starter in Oglethorpe County’s secondary, bringing experience and leadership.

Pass made significant plays on both sides of the ball last season. Holland said Pass’ experience in big games and playoff situations gives the Patriots flexibility in the secondary.

Holland said Pass can line up against an opponent’s top receiver in man coverage or play within the Patriots’ zone schemes, allowing the defense to adjust based on the opponent.

Pass will be joined by junior Rico Howard at cornerback.

Howard started last season and made several big plays in Oglethorpe County’s playoff game against Elbert County.

“Rico is a good coverage guy who doesn’t mind contact,” Holland said. "He’s not afraid to come down the hill and fit the run, and that’s the same for Cooper Davenport.”

At safety, sophomore Zion Pass, Nicah’s brother, will be joined by freshman Cooper Davenport. Holland said Zion brings speed, physicality and a strong motor, while Davenport has adjusted to the varsity level despite being a freshman.

The Patriots will look to mix man and zone coverage more this season after heavily relying on man coverage last season.

Sophomore Tristen Cooper and junior Jackson Harrison will also add depth to the secondary. Holland expects both players to contribute this season.

“Cooper doesn’t look like a freshman, if you look at him,” Holland said. “He’s been a really solid football player his entire career up until this point.”

Holland also said Nicah Pass, Zion Pass and Hayden Williams were selected by their teammates in the preseason as captains.
