The hard luck Patriot football team continued to get tantalizingly close, but it is a good thing they are all too young for the cigar. They just can’t seem to grab it.

Last Friday night, the Patriots led Jefferson County, 15-13, with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter but ended up dropping the region game in Louisville, 28-15.

Coach Mike Holland said his team played a tough, physical game but couldn’t hold on at the end.

Many local folks were able to watch the contest on TV and noted how complimentary the announcers were about the improvement of the Paiots year over year.

The Patriots had 232 total yards, 124 rushing and 108 passing. They averaged 5.65 yards per play.

However the team could convert on three of 10 third downs and one of three fourth down.

They still managed to pick up eight first downs.

They had a line of scrimmage in the red zone just once but managed to score.

Nate Brown just missed a 100 yards rushing with 95 yards on 19 carries. Sophomore Elijah Hood picked up 21 yards on five carries. Will Sampson only got 8 yards on 12 carries but did score a TD.

Sampson picked up another TD passing as he hit on 3-5 for 108 yards. Henry Johnson caught two of those passes for 98 yards and a TD. Nate Irwin caught the third pass for eight yards.

Joseph Turner hit his one extra point try.

Quentin Nash was an active middle linebacker on the night as he racked up 13 tackles. Two of those were lost yardage plays for Jefferson County.

Defensive tackle KB Bonds did not get his third TD of the season but did have 7 tackles with one sack./ Jonathan Cronic had six tackles, one being for a loss.

Josey is the next opponent for a travel weary group of Patriots that is going to be on the road for four out of five Friday nights in October. Not only is it on the road but the game will be on Saturday at noon. Holland said that this was obviously out of the routine but that he was confident that the strange date and time will not have much affect on his team.

“It has actually been a blessing to get them an extra day of rest this week. Some of our guys were banged up this week. We had a great practice Tuesday morning.” Holland added that Josey was a very athletic team that has the athletes that can score on any given play.

“We are going to play just as physical as we did last week to put ourselves in a position to win. It will be critical to start fast and not let our foot off the gas.” Josey is 1-6 on the season and recently lost to Jefferson County 27-12.
