The Oglethorpe County girls track team, the defending Class A Division I champion, opened its season by finishing second at the Currahee Relays on March 1.
Elin Turner scored 34 points (first in the 300-meter hurdles and second in the triple jump), Sydnie Henderson had 26 points (second place in the 400) and Georgia Turner had 18 points.
“We had a solid first meet with 13 different girls scoring points,” coach Brianna Dickens said. “The girls have been working hard and we look forward to building on our performance this Friday at the Wildcat Invitational.”
The boys track team was third at the Currahee Relays.
Jordan Johnson, who was on the winning 4x100-meter relay team, was the leading point scorer. Nicah Pass won the high jump and Kemauri Brown won the long jump and was on the 4x100 team.
“The OCHS boys track and field team performed well at Saturday’s meet,” boys coach Maurice Freeman said. “There were a couple of PRs in individual events. The relays all opened up with quicker times than last year’s first meet, so there is some promise with all of the relays. I look forward to seeing progression at the next meet.”
The track teams are at the Wildcat Invitational at Apalachee on Friday.
Baseball team off to 5-5 start
Jackson Tatum pitched a no-hitter to lead the OCHS baseball team to a 15-0 victory over Jasper County in the second game of a doubleheader on Feb. 28. The Patriots lost the first game 7-6.
The Patriots, who were 5-5 through Monday, also defeated Jasper County 6-5 on Feb. 25.

Rios continues scoring streak
Miguel Rios has scored eight goals in the past three games for the boys soccer team.
He scored three in a 7-1 win over Washington-Wilkes, four to spark an 8-1 win over Jefferson County and another in a 4-1 loss to Hart County.
He leads the team with nine goals this season. The Patriots were 2-3 through Monday.
“Jefferson County provided our first home win of the season,” coach Josh Austin said. “This was a huge accomplishment for us. Our team played together as a unit and was able to come away with a big win.
“Hart County was a growing pain for a new team. Hart County is well organized and had a good game plan. Hart County is an example of the type of team we want to become this season.”
The Patriots host Providence Christian at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Girls soccer off to 3-1 start
Ava Nimmons and Marin Sampson each scored goals to lead the girls soccer team to a 3-2 victory in penalty kicks. OCHS won the shootout with five goals to Hart County’s three.

“We still have a long way to go, but we are getting better every time we take the field,” coach Erich Forschler said. “We are learning and growing. We will see where we continue to go.”
