Elin Turner won the 100-meter hurdles and the 800 meters to lead the Oglethorpe County girls track team to victory in the Lincoln County Region Tune-up meet on April 18.

The Lady Patriots scored 173 points to easily outpace Washington-Wilkes, which finished with 92 points, and Lincoln County with 70 points.

Denim Goddard won the long and triple jumps, Kenzie Henderson won the high jump, Sydnie Henderson won the 400 meters, Zy Edwards won the shot put and Amber Watkins won the discus. 

The 4x800 (Emily Wisham, Avana Stewart, Priscilla Lopez, Zharia Burgess), 4x200 (Karman Bermudez, Goddard, Sydnie Henderson, Carlee Appling), 4x100 (Paris Crowder, Goddard, Bermudez, Kenzie Henderson) and 4x400 (Bermudez, Appling, Kenzie Henderson, Sydnie Henderson) relay teams also won.  

“We had a good day,” coach Tim Stoudenmire said. “This is the time of year that we see a lot of PRs, and we turned in 10 PRs at this meet. We are trending in the right direction, and I think our training cycle is right on schedule for us to peak in two weeks. This week our objective is simple: qualify everyone and win the region.”

 

Boys soccer

 

Rabun County scored two second-half goals to break a tie and defeat Oglethorpe County 3-1 in the first round of the Class A Division I boys soccer tournament on April 17.

OCHS was the No. 2 seed from Region 5-A and Rabun County was the third seed from Region 8-A.

The Lady Patriots’ second-round game at Paideia was moved to Wednesday, after The Echo’s deadline. The Echo will have results in next week’s edition. 

 

Baseball

 

The OCHS baseball team was eliminated from the first round of the Class A Division I playoffs when it was swept by Tallalah Falls on Tuesday night.

Tallulah Falls, the second seed from Region 8-A, defeated the Patriots 10-0 in Game 1 and then 7-2 in the second game in Tallulah Falls.

The Patriots, the No. 3 seed from Region 5-A, finished 12-19 in their first season under coach Mike Campbell. 

Last week, the Patriots defeated Jasper County 13-3 and 7-3 to earn the third seed in the playoffs.

Evans Wilkins went 3-for-4 with three runs, four steals and an RBI in the first win. Eli Frost allowed two earned runs in five innings for the victory.

Austin Lowe had three hits, three runs and three RBIs in the second win.
