Dayon Toomer
Dayon Toomer has been hired as the new boys basketball coach at Oglethorpe County High School.
Toomer replaces Carlos Strong, who led the program for two seasons. The Patriots were 2-22 overall and 0-12 in Region 8-A Division I this past season.
The Oglethorpe County BOE approved Toomer in a work session on Tuesday, Superintendent Beverley Levine confirmed in a text Wednesday morning.
“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Toomer to Oglethorpe County,” OCHS co-athletic director Michael Holland wrote in a text on Wednesday. “Coach Toomer brings a wealth of experience as a basketball coach and relationship builder. He will be great for our kids and our community.”
Toomer has coached at Swainsboro, McIntosh County Academy and Bacon County, where he led the boys basketball team to three playoff appearances in four seasons, according to the Oglethorpe County School System.
Toomer is certified in health and physical education, and special education general curriculum. He’s also coached track and field and football, but Holland said Toomer will coach only boys basketball “right now.”
The school system posted: “He believes coaching is an extension of teaching, using athletics as a platform to build discipline, accountability, leadership and perseverance in student-athletes. His focus goes beyond wins and losses, emphasizing growth, character and preparation for life after sports.”
