Oglethorpe County’s Jordan Johnson and Reid Coley were selected to the All-Region 8-A first team last week.
Johnson played several positions, including defensive back, running back and receiver this year for the Patriots. Coley was a stalwart on the offensive line.
Second-team selections include Darius Heard (athlete), Brock Barrett (offensive line), Payton Prince (running back) and Braxton Edmonson (punter).
Jackson Tatum, O’Maury Huggs, Dalton Hilley and Clint Graham were honorable mention selections.
Wrestling team fourth at tourney
Luke Holbrooks went 5-0 in individual matches to lead the Oglethorpe County wrestling team to a fourth-place finish at the Franklin County Turkey Duals on Nov. 27.
The Patriots were 3-2 in the tournament, losing to West Oak and Palmetto, the Nos. 1 and 2 ranked teams in South Carolina. They defeated East Hall, Grovetown and Franklin County.
Other top wrestlers include Paris Crowder, Aiden Dellinger and Dylan Dunuway, who each went 4-1, and Mathew Haney and Klo Say, who were each 3-2.
“It was a gritty team performance from our guys,” OCHS coach Steve Mason said. “We are a little beat up and sick right now, we are limping a little right now, but our kids fought hard and they fought for each other. I was proud of them.
Cheerleading in first competitive tourney
While most fall sports have ended, the Oglethorpe County game day cheerleading squad is taking to the mat one last time in Columbus, Georgia.
The program started its competition squad this year and are competing at the Game Day Cheerleading Championship this week.
With freshmen and sophomores taking up the majority of the roster, coach Morgan Williams said she believes the team has a lot of room to grow.
“We have zero seniors and only three juniors between all three squads, so a very young team,” Williams said. “And I just know in a couple of years, hopefully, we’ll be bringing home state titles, if not this year.”
