County names Lewis as its administrator

Jason Lewis will be appointed as the Oglethorpe County administrator, both Commission Chair Jay Paul and Lewis confirmed Monday.

The official move will take place on March 10.

Lewis, who is the director of EMS, said Josh Robinson, the deputy director, will take over that role, but Lewis will be able to retain the position of coroner, which is an elected position.

The Board of Commissioners went into executive session in its February meeting.

“They let me discuss it with my family and everything because it’s a huge change for me,” Lewis said.

The county administrator duties have been split between Lewis, county clerk Amy Forrester and Jeff Sharp, the director of planning, zoning and compliance, since former administrator Josh Hawkins left to become the capital projects director in Athens-Clarke County in May 2024.

“Honestly, it’s just trying to be supportive of (the BOC) and (Paul), and right now, I’m still trying to get my legs under me,” Lewis said. “Since we started the expanded role and I actually kind of moved down here, I’ve been learning more and more things. Amy’s been fantastic trying to help all of us transition. I’m eager.”

Lewis said he’ll still be able to teach an EMT pathway course at Oglethorpe County High School.
