Hazel Sanders, the well-known owner of Hazel’s Hair Salon, in downtown Lexington, died Monday morning, her daughter Vickie Sanders confirmed.
Sanders had operated her shop in Lexington for eight years after she worked in Crawford for six years prior to that, according to a 2024 article in The Oglethorpe Echo.
“She was so proud of her community and loved the people of this county as much as she loved all of us in her family,” Vickie Sanders told The Echo in a Facebook message.
She would often travel to cut the hair of homebound customers and also specialized in cutting children’s hair.
Winterville’s Diane Hollars told The Echo in 2024 her granddaughter had her first haircut with Sanders, who also cut her grandsons’ hair. They call her “Nana Hazel,” Hollars said.
“My grandson has autism, and he is very finicky about who touches him or who he’s around,” Hollars added in the article. “Hazel made him very comfortable, and he won’t go to anybody else.”
Sanders also was quick to help others in need, often collecting donations for families impacted by a fire or injured in accidents.
Lexington to honor Kim Bradford
Lexington Mayor Evelyn Reece and city council have proclaimed Aug. 3-6 as Kim Bradford Appreciation Week, in honor of her 10 years as the city clerk.
They invite residents to celebrate Bradford’s faithful service by dropping by city hall next Monday-Thursday with a word of good cheer, a greeting card or a token of appreciation.
Oglethorpe County K-9 officer Seto dies
Longtime K-9 officer Seto died on July 24, the Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office reported in a Facebook post.
He was 16.
The post stated: “He served our community well. There are many people in prison and a lot of drugs that never saw the streets of Oglethorpe thanks to him and his handler, Colt Young. … Rest well it was well earned.”
Young is now the chief of the Winterville Police Department.
Community Day set for OCMS on Aug. 8
The annual Community Day will be from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 8 at Oglethorpe County Middle School.
The event will include free community resources, hot dogs, chips and drinks, and activities for children, including touch a truck.
