More than 50 trees go down in storm

Saturday’s storm knocked down more than 50 trees throughout Oglethorpe County, public works director Adam Nation said.

The storms produced winds up to 30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph in the Athens area, according to the National Weather Service.

Nation said most of the damage was on the north side of the county, running from Winterville to Carlton and included an oak — estimated to be between 150-200 years old — that blocked both sides of Crawford Smithonia Road.

His crew and firefighters began clearing roads and debris soon after the storm ended.

Nation said his crew needed about “20 loads” to clear the tree that blocked Crawford Smithonia Road.

About 546 homes were without power Saturday evening, according to findenergy.com, which tracks outages.
