Oglethorpe County’s annual Community Day, which is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Saturday, at Oglethorpe County Middle School, will feature free hot dogs, chips and water for students, headphones for every grade, school supplies, various activities and even free in-person haircuts by OCHS grad Brian Hercules.
New superintendent Phillip Powell is ready for the first day of school on Friday.
“A new school year always brings a sense of excitement and possibility, and I am grateful for the opportunity to begin this journey,” said Powell, who officially took over from Beverley Levine in July, but has been working in the county since the early spring.
Teachers, as always, reported earlier than the students and were in their schools on Monday. They’ve spent their time catching up with fellow teachers and staff, in meetings and decorating their classrooms.
The district will provide all school supplies, with the exception of students book bags and headphones if requested. Teachers may also request wish list items like paper towels, Clorox wipes, tissues, hand sanitizer and Lysol spray.
Levine, who started her new job as coordinator of Oglethorpe County Family Connection, said the organization would take a larger role in the county’s annual Community Day, which is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8 at Oglethorpe County Middle School.
Organizers moved the event from Bryan Park in 2024 due to excessive summer temperatures, leading to higher attendance than when all the tables and vendors were outside.
About 500 people attended Community Day in 2024, followed by 350 last year.
The first 300 people on Saturday will receive a free market tote.
Powell welcomed the students and staff back for a new school year.
“I encourage every student to work hard, get involved, and make the most of every opportunity because this year has the potential to be your best one yet. Go Patriots!” Powell said.
