The Oglethorpe County Board of Commissioners approved the Board of Education’s recommended millage rate of 16.025 at a called meeting on Sept. 19.

The commission also approved the hiring of two school resource officers (one for OCHS and one to rotate between the other schools). The Sheriff’s Office has posted openings for those positions.

The millage rate, which is the amount of tax dollars for every $1,000 of a property’s assessed value, is an increase from 15.82 in 2023, but less than rates of 16.65 in 2022 and 18.40 in 2021.

The county’s rate is 5.7596 for city or incorporated areas, down 2.313% from last year. Unincorporated area rates will be 5.475, a decrease of 0.743%.

Jay Paul, chair of the county commission, said "the county is required by law to adopt the BOE’s recommendation of their millage rate.”
