The Oglethorpe Echo
A house on Mitchell Farm Road in Colbert was damaged by a fire on Saturday.
No one was home at the time of the blaze, but two pets died in the fire, county officials said.
Six Oglethorpe County fire departments — Beaverdam, Sandy Cross, Devil’s Pond, Pleasant Hill, Arnoldsville and Wolfskin — two from Madison County (Colbert and Hull) and the Winterville and Athens-Clarke fire departments responded to the blaze.
A neighbor called Oglethorpe County 911 at 11:25 a.m., director Angela Jackson said in a text, and the Beaverdam Fire Department had a truck on the scene by 11:31 a.m., assistant chief Cody Gibbs said.
No flames were initially visible, Gibbs said. Beaverdam chief Jehu Post made entry through the front door.
There was heavy smoke in the house and the flames were under control by 12:35 p.m.
The fire was contained to two rooms and their contents, Post said in a text.
