Oglethorpe County plans to support Franklin County in its battle against a possible Pilgrim’s Pride chicken rendering plant on state Route 145 near the Broad River in Franklin Springs.
Commission chair Jay Paul said he’s sent a resolution to county attorney Chip Ferguson. If Ferguson approves it, Paul said in a text, he will add it to the agenda for the Oglethorpe County Board of Commission meeting scheduled for Monday.
Franklin Springs also has plans to build a wastewater treatment facility near the Broad River, which flows through Madison, Oglethorpe and other counties.
Madison Journal Today, which covers Madison County, confirmed through an open records request that Franklin Springs Mayor Lee Moore has been in contact with representatives with Pilgrim’s Pride.
Paul wrote in a text that Franklin County Commission Chair Courtney Long “reached out to me and all the other counties downstream asking for support, and I think the majority of the counties will mimic a resolution authored by Franklin County, which does just that.”
The Franklin County Citizen Leader reported that Franklin County’s proposed resolution calls on the Environmental Protection Division for assistance.
