Carrie’s Corner Store & Cafe opens

Carrie Faris said her first couple of days have been “steady, not too busy.” She owns Carrie’s Corner, a convenience store that opened Monday in Stephens. A cafe is in the plans, but she said Tuesday that she’s still waiting on an inspection.   “Fingers crossed this will be soon,” she said.

Collins, Waldroup add planning, zoning duties

Hattie Collins and Scottie Waldroup have assumed planning and zoning responsibilities since Ashley Peterson left the department in February.   “(They) have done a fantastic job satisfying those duties,” Oglethorpe County Commission Chair Jay Paul said in an email.

News Roundup: Dellinger, Tweedell and Graham make UGA majorette line

Oglethorpe County’s Addie Dellinger, Carrie Tweedell and Emily Graham were recently chosen for the UGA majorettes.    Dellinger and Tweedell graduated from OCHS in 2021 and were UGA majorettes last year. Graham is scheduled to graduate from OCHS on May 28.

More pay, resources and balance

The Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office has undergone several changes since David Gabriel was elected sheriff in 2016 and reelected in 2020. Over the last five years, Gabriel has worked to improve both his office and its community involvement through several initiatives and additions.

Only trash in drained quarries

Law enforcement officials came up empty in their search for the remains of Jimmy Anglin in abandoned quarries on Rocky Drive this week.   They finished searching the quarries on Tuesday, completing two weeks of draining what was initially thought to be one quarry, but turned out to be two.

Hawkins approved as county administrator

After months of discussion and deliberation, the Oglethorpe County Board of Commissioners approved the motion to appoint a county administrator and administrator ordinance.   Josh Hawkins, who was the county’s director of finance, will hold the title of county administrator.

Elections supervisor Marilyn Huff-Waller is the first person to greet you when you walk into the Oglethorpe County Board of Elections. Surrounded by stacks of paperwork, stamps and envelopes, Huff-Waller is preparing for the Georgia primary on May 24.

Marigold Festival to return after two-year break

The Winterville Marigold Festival is back after two years of disruptions.   The event will include live indoor and outdoor music, food and art vendors, a parade and more for people of all ages on Saturday, May 14 at Pittard Park.

Fines will help pay for bathroom damage

Oglethorpe County School System officials brought charges against two individuals who defaced bathrooms at the middle school last semester.    Their fines will compensate for the costs of repairing the damage, which included broken soap and paper towel dispensers.
