Clarke Benedict Dowling, born May 20, 1926, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 99 in Crawford.
To the end of his days, Clarke maintained his wit, kindness and gracious manner to all. The family recalls many hours Clarke spent as a handyman and craftsman maintaining their Victorian home in Poughkeepsie. He will be remembered as strong, steadfast and resourceful: a man always present for his family.
Clarke grew up in Corning, New York. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving his country in World War II. He later attended Princeton University, graduating in 1950.
In 1954, he married Frances Rowe of Schenectady, New York, and together they raised two children, William and Elizabeth. Clarke was an avid sailor on Lake Keuka, the Great Sacandaga Lake, and the Hudson River. He was physically active and people remember him riding his bike into his 90s.
Clarke spent 40 years with IBM in Poughkeepsie, building a career marked by dedication and integrity. In 1991, he and Frances settled in St. Simons Island, where they enjoyed many wonderful years in retirement.
Every summer until 2012, they made the long drive to Kathan Kamps in upstate New York, a place that held special meaning for him and his family.
Survivors include brother Scott Dowling of Shaker Heights, Ohio, son William Dowling of Philadelphia, daughter Elizabeth Aylsworth of Crawford, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Frances Dowling and his sister Mary Dowling.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. March 21 at Faith Presbyterian Church in Watkinsville. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Clarke’s memory may be made to Habitat for Humanity.
