Mrs. Evelyene Mathews Moon, 88, of Elberton Road. Lexington, wife of the late John Marvin “Bud” Moon for 65 years, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2026, at home, surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Moon was born Jan. 28, 1938, in Oglethorpe County to John Lee Mathews and Sallie Mae Harrison Mathews.
She was a faithful member of Burts United Methodist Church in Carlton and was a lifelong resident of Oglethorpe County. She devoted her life to her husband and raising her children and loved being a granny.
She worked previously at Chicopee Mill and Granny’s Kitchen. Evelyene’s love language was cooking and baking for her family and friends.
She was a master biscuit maker where she used her craft for the ham and egg suppers at Burts United Methodist Church for many years. Evelyene was also known for the best coconut cakes.
Evelyene is survived by her daughters: Sheila Hill, Debra Armour (Lyn), Brenda Mattox (Vance), grandchildren: Paige Murphy (Andy), Jeremy Hill (Sydney), John Armour (Katie), Mitch Davis, Casey Fleming (Jarrett), Jessie Rice (Alex), Peyton Mattox (Eliana) great-grandchildren: Maddie Armour, JD Armour, Maddox Bradberry, Hudson Bradberry, Tripp Fleming, Beckett Rice and Kerry Faye Murphy and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her siblings: Alton Mathews, Robert Lee Mathews, Eugene Mathews, John Mathews, Loyd Mathews, Mary Dale Johnson, Viola Dale, Johnnie Lou Stevens and Joe Clyde Mathews.
A celebration of Evelyene’s life will be held at noon Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2026, at Burts United Methodist Church. The family will greet friends from 11 a.m. to noon, prior to the service at Burts United Methodist Church with the Rev. Anne Hanson, Pastor Dr. Tim Harrison and the Rev. Dale Giefig officiating.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery with John Armour, Mitch Davis, Jeremy Hill, Peyton Mattox, Jarrett Fleming and Alex Rice serving as pallbearers.
