Mary Jeanette Dawkins Hemphill passed away peacefully on July 17, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on Aug. 20, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Ozzie Adell Dawkins and Lalla Norman Dawkins.

 

Jeanette was a devout Christian and a dedicated member of Salem Baptist Church in Lexington, where she spent many years serving on the kitchen committee. In addition to her time at the church, she spent 22 years working outside of the home at an apparel plant.

 

She loved the outdoors and was a lifelong deer hunter. 

 

Everyone who met Jeanette came to know and love her. Described as the heart and foundation of the family, she will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

 

She is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Douglas Nash Hemphill, Sr.; father Ozzie Adell Dawkins and her mother Lalla Norman Dawkins; her son, Charles Dennis Hemphill; brothers, William Dawkins (Janet) and Thomas Irwin Dawkins; sisters, Helen Grindstaff (Bergen) and Elizabeth Cunningham; sister-in-law, Marion Dawkins; and her son-in-law David Wall, Sr.

 

She is survived by her children, Brenda Wall, Douglas Nash Hemphill, Jr., Jill Southers; brothers, Lewis Dawkins and Sammy Dawkins (Vicky); sister-in-law, Janet Dawkins; brother-in-law, Tommy Cunningham; grandchildren, Amy Wall-Lance (Brian), David Wall Jr. (Selina), Jonathan Hemphill, Jason Southers (Lani), Joni Eberhart (Ben); great-grandchildren: Brook, Mason, Jeslyn, Lindsey, Landon, and one great -grandchild, Morgan; close niece and nephew, Vickie Stevens (Clay) and Tim Hayes (Allison), and many nieces and nephews who were loved dearly!

 

The funeral service will be held at Salem Baptist Church (694 Salem Church Road, Lexington, GA 30648) at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 21. Visitation will be held prior to the service, from 1-2 p.m. at the same location. 

 

Interment will follow the service at the church cemetery.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations in Jeanette's memory may be made to Salem Baptist Church at 694 Salem Church Road, Lexington, GA 30648.
