Nora Mae Smith Grimes

Nora Mae Smith Grimes

Mrs. Nora Mae Smith Grimes, 90, of Carlton, died on Friday, May 17, 2024.

Grimes was born in Pendleton, South Carolina, on Aug. 2, 1933, the daughter of the late Luther James Smith and Carrie Ethel Melissa Pinion Smith.

Nora worked as a seamstress for most of her life, working at Elberton Manufacturing Company and General Times in Elberton. She enjoyed comforting bereaved families at Lord & Stephens Funeral Homes, where she worked as a greeter for 13 years.

Nora was a member of Vesta Baptist Church.

Never one to be idle, she loved traveling and never hesitated about going anywhere alone as long as she had her map as her copilot. She loved shopping; however, her greatest love was her family.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law: James “Rex” and Mary Grimes, and Roger Dale and Marinda Grimes, all of Carlton; and sisters: Cecil Patterson and Sharon Smith, both of South Carolina.

She was a devoted “Granny” to her grandchildren: Wes and April Grimes, Christan and Phillip McDaniel, Jacob Grimes, Chelsea and Chad Doggett, Danielle and Kyle Temple, Courtney and Josh Wheless, Carrie Grimes-Skinner and Drew Skinner, and Logan and Casie Grimes; and a loving “Old Granny” to her great-grandchildren: Makayla, Macie, McKinley, Oliver, Jad, Whit, Olivia, Jake, Lakin, Nora, and Emrie.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Carl Allen Grimes; son, Robert Allen Grimes; and several siblings.

The family is at their respective homes and will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, May 20 at Berry Funeral Home.

Funeral services celebrating her life will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 21 in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Huff officiating. Interment will follow in Mattox Cemetery in Carlton, with Leland Patterson, Michael Patterson, Bryan Smith, Steve Black, Pete Mincey and Eddie Hall honored as pallbearers.

Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
