Peggy ‘Peg’ Smith Galloway

Peggy “Peg” June Smith Galloway, 91, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, in Athens, after a short illness.

Born in Piedmont, South Carolina, to the late Benjamin Franklin Smith and Beulah McClain Smith, “Peg” (as she was known to most friends) spent nearly all her life in her hometown before relocating to Athens in her later years.

She was married to the late Terry George Galloway for 46 years. She worked for many years in textiles at the JP Stevens Dunean plant. Peg loved solving crossword puzzles, listening to Willie Nelson songs, watching “The Dukes of Hazzard” and enjoying her favorite meal from Cracker Barrel.

In recent years, Peg found deep joy in spending time with family and the many dear friends she made in Athens. Peg’s quick wit and warm smile made every room brighter.

She is survived by her three children: Renee Galloway (Roger) of Pelzer, South Carolina; Zane Galloway (Christa) of Pickens, South Carolina; and Chad Galloway (BJ) of Athens; as well as her grandchildren Michelle and Michael Langley, and her great-grandchildren Uriah, Mary, Elizabeth, Jason, William and Samuel.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at support.woundedwarriorproject.org.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, July 2 in the chapel of Reflections Mausoleum of Robinson Memorial Gardens in Easley, South Carolina. Peg’s Celebration of Life will follow at 2 p.m.. Her entombment will be private.

A Celebration of Life will also be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, in Athens.
