There’s lots to love about our rural community. Near the top of the list is our wide-open, rolling landscape.
Time after time, we hear people say, “I just love driving around Oglethorpe County. The countryside is so beautiful.”
And we say, “Amen!”
But then there are times when we wonder, “What are people thinking?” Those are the days when you see ugly piles of litter strewn along our roadways.
Take a look at the photo above. A reader sent us this picture of a pile in Sandy Cross. And below, how about the bedding dumped on Smokey Road?
What were these people thinking? Apparently, they weren’t.
But they need to think about the local ordinance (Sec. 26-6) that spells out the penalties for violating the anti-litter law in Oglethorpe County.
Littering and illegal dumping can land you in front of the magistrate court judge. If convicted, you could be fined “not less than $100 nor more than $1,000, or up to 60 days imprisonment, or both.”
The ordinance gives more details, but that’s a snapshot.
If you really love Oglethorpe, don’t litter.
