As a high school senior, I attended a national student council convention in Virgina. My host family pulled out a travel guide that gave instructions on how to detour around Ludowici’s infamous quick-changing traffic light. Such was the notorious era in Long County’s history. Gov. Lester Mattox installed a billboard to warn motorists of the speed trap. U.S. 301 brought big business to my hometown, so the Jesup Businessmen’s Association erected a warning sign, too. But beyond those blemished times were legions of fine folks who called the rural community their home. One of them was my friend, the late Bo Warren. The four-lane stretch of U.S. 301 between the Altamaha River and Ludowici is named — in his memory — the Howard “Bo” Warren Parkway. Bo was a legendary high school and college two-sport star. He once held his college alma mater’s home run record and scored 1,469 basketball points. Bo is in Georgia Southern University’s sports hall of fame.
A box was sitting on the highway. It looked like a package. I was going one way, and it was on the other side of the four-lane.
But approaching, I was far enough away to witness what happened.
