Barrett, offensive line foundation of team

The offensive line is going to be the foundation for the football team this season, and senior Brock Barrett will be the leader.

“Brock just needs to continue doing what he’s doing, and helping his teammates get better,” head coach Michael Holland said. “Which he does every single day.”

Barrett is a versatile player and “definitely the anchor” of the line, Holland said. He has played every position on the line and will play center this year.

At 6-foot-3 and 295 pounds, Barrett is best utilized in the center position, Holland said.

His stature isn’t the only dominant thing about him, though. Barrett is extremely vocal and intentional about his leadership roles.

“I lead through example and try to show the younger guys the way we play varsity football,” he said.

Sophomores Jack Baldwin, Coleton Sexton, Isaiah Hood and junior Jake Huff play alongside Barrett. They all said Barrett is the player they lean on and look to for advice.

“He’s kind of like a big brother,” Hood said.

Senior Tanner Mckie plays tackle and center and is “the most experienced offensive lineman outside of Brock,” Holland said. Mckie serves as Barrett’s right-hand man on the line.

Holland said the improvement this season has to start with the line. He said those players don’t get enough credit for their skills and importance.

“We’re only going to be as good as our offensive line,” he said. “So, that’s always going to be a focus, and it’s going to continue to be an emphasis.”
