Prep Roundup: Turner, Matthews honored on volleyball senior night

    The Oglethorpe County volleyball team lost to East Jackson on senior night on Tuesday, but remains 5-1 in Region 8-AA.

     

    The Patriots lost in five sets, winning the second and third sets (25-22 and 25-19), but losing the first, fourth and fifth sets (25-22, 25-22 and 17-15).

     

    Seniors Nora Turner and Haley Matthews were honored, and Leanna Newton was recognized for surpassing 1,000 career kills.

     

    In a match on Sept. 17, Newton had 18 kills and Ana Vu served for seven points to lead the Patriots to a 25-16, 25-14 win at Commerce. Naomi McPeake and Lannah Scarborough had seven digs each, and McPeake added 23 assists in the victory.

     

    The defending Class A state champs (14-14 overall) also defeated Social Circle 25-23 and 25-9 on Sept. 17.

     

    On Sept. 15, OCHS defeated Prince Avenue 25-20, 22-25 and 15-8 behind Newton’s 22 kills, Scarborough’s 16 digs and McPeake’s 20 assists.

     

    Weaver gets win, hits homer in 10-2 victory

     

    Deven Weaver gave up one hit in four innings, homered and had two RBIs to lead the Oglethorpe County softball team to a 10-2 victory at Putnam County on Monday.

     

    Lillie Anderson had two hits and two RBIs, Khloe Eidson drove in two runs, Riley Jones had two hits and an RBI, and Georgia Turner had two hits for the Patriots (12-7 overall).

     

    The Patriots play at Habersham Central at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

     

    Lamm, Booth set PRs in races

     

    Drew Lamm and Maleah Booth set personal records for the Oglethorpe County cross country teams at Apalachee on Saturday.

     

    Three of the Patriots’ top eight male runners missed the race. John Adams was the top finisher with a time of 17:48.71.

     

    Margarita Rodriguez-Valdez finished in 25:21.36, just ahead of teammate Bessie Musimbi in 25:45.58.

     

    OCMS results

     

    The OCMS softball team lost to Legacy Knoll on Sept. 16 and West Jackson on Sept. 21.

     

    Volleyball Team A lost to East Jackson 25-17, 25-19 on Sept. 16 and Team B split, winning 25-19 and losing 25-22.

     

    Team A then lost to Legacy Knoll 25-22 and 25-11 in the tournament on Sept. 19.

     

    The football team lost 28-6 to West Jackson on Sept. 17.

     

    The boys cross country team was 10th at the Apple Hawkins Invitational on Sept. 19. Reeves Harrison was seventh.
