Hartrum heads into year as starting quarterback

Senior Caden Hartrum moved into the starting quarterback role last season after transfers and injuries. He earned the starting spot heading into this season after his performance, head coach Michael Holland said.

Hartrum said he told Holland that he was ready to start as quarterback when Hunter Hall broke his collarbone last fall.

“I feel I’m ready,” Hartrum said. “(I’m) prepared for it and meant for it.”

Holland took a chance on Hartrum, who moved from receiver last season, and is confident in his abilities after seeing his knowledge of the offense and relaxed nature on the field.

“If he protects the football and understands the offense to a point where he can lead it and help other players, then I think we’ll be successful on offense,” Holland said.

Holland still wants to see Hartrum expand his leadership skills. He said the players around him should “be able to look at him and follow him.”

Hartrum said in order to be the leader the team needs, he needs to “be different” and develop a different mindset than other players. He plans to push his teammates to work hard and correct their mistakes.

“You can ask everybody, I’m always up their butts,” he said.

Hartrum said the Patriots have been working to have a successful season.

“It’s got to be 100% effort on both sides of the ball,” he said.
