Oglethorpe County track and field athletes are heading to the Class A Division I state track and field meet at the new UGA track on Tuesday, May 12.
For the boys, Ke’mauri Brown and Nicah Pass each qualified in four events at the Class A Division I sectionals in Bremen on Monday.
Brown qualified in the 100, long jump and is on the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams. Pass will compete in the triple and high jumps, and as part of the 4x100 and 4x200 teams.
O’Maury Huggs will compete in the shot put, John Adams in the 1,600 and Cory Tillman in the 3,200 meters.
The 4x100 relay team includes Brown, Pass, Jackson Harrison and Preston Davis.
The 4x200 team includes Brown, Pass, Davis and Caleb Stephens.
The 4x400 team includes Harrison, Stephens, Kaden McDaris and Preston Pittard.
The 4x800 team includes Adams, Tillman, Julian George and Luke Holbrooks.
“They’ve gotten better each meet and I’m looking forward to seeing them do well at state,” OCHS boys coach Maurice Freeman said.
The OCHS girls qualifiers include Elin Turner, who qualified in four events (long jump, triple jump, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles).
Zharia Burgess also qualified in the 100 hurdles, Emily Wisham qualified for the 1,600 and Jaliyah Glenn qualified in the 400 meters.
The 4x100 and the 4x200 teams include Burgess, Jacelynn McCall, Nora Turner and Mirakle Merritt.
Wisham, Glenn, Georgia Turner and Nora Turner are on both the 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams.
“As far as the state meet goes, the competition is going to be very tough,” OCHS girls co-coach Michael Holland said. “I do believe that if we perform like I know we can, we can finish in the top 10.”
The state meets for all classifications will take place over four days at UGA, starting Monday. The schedule:
Monday, May 11: 1A D2 and 4A
Tuesday, May 12: 1A D1 and 6A
Wednesday, May 13: Private, 5A and adapted
