Oglethorpe County’s Elizabeth Cook was selected as the Area 8-A player of the year on Saturday.
Cook, a junior, led the Patriots to a third-place finish in the area tournament. The Patriots were to host Haralson County at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the first round of the Class A state tournament.
Kenzie Henderson and Sofia Horsley, both seniors, were selected to the first team. Leanna Newton made the second team and Samantha Amos was honorable mention.
Coach Brianne Harrison was selected as the area coach of the year.
In the area tournament, the Patriots lost to Athens Academy and then defeated Banks County on Saturday.
Softball team in Class A tourney
The OCHS softball team (13-11) will play at East Laurens at noon on Friday in the first round of the Class A Division I tournament. The second game will follow.
Football team to host Commerce
The Oglethorpe County football team will host Commerce at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
The Patriots fell 48-14 to Rabun County last week to drop to 0-7 and 0-3 in Region 8-A Division I.
Commerce is 4-3, 2-1 in the region.
Last Friday, Darius Heard was 9-for-13 for 91 yards passing and a touchdown against Rabun County. He also rushed for 42 yards and a score.
Jackson Tatum had 42 yards receiving and a touchdown, Payton Prince rushed for 56 yards and Jordan Johnson added 48 yards rushing.
Johnson also had four tackles and a forced fumble. O’Maury Huggs had four tackles and a fumble recovery.
Sydnie Henderson second at meet
OCHS senior Sydnie Henderson was second with a time of 21:17 at the fifth annual Kent Kramer Classic 2024 at Athens Christian on Saturday.
Elin Turner finished in the top 20 with a time of 24:23.
The top five finishers for the OCHS boys included: Cory Tillman (19:10), John Adams (19:30), Ethan McLean (20:16), Josiah Young (20:40) and Rex Allen (20:42).
