Henderson, Goddard help girls track win region meet

 

Kenzie Henderson and Denim Goddard tied for the high point trophy as the Oglethorpe County girls track team won the Region 5-A Division I meet at Jasper County on April 25.

 

Henderson won the high jump and the 300-meter hurdles, and was a member of two winning relay teams. Goddard won the long and triple jumps, and also was on two winning relay teams.

 

The Lady Patriots scored 233 points to outdistance Prince Avenue, which finished with 191 points. 

 

“On paper, prior to the start of the meet, Prince Avenue had about a 25-point advantage over us,” coach Tim Stoudenmire said. “I challenged our girls, we overperformed above what we were seeded in nine separate events, and the result was a championship. Coaching: It’s just getting a kid to go places that she can’t go by herself."

 

Jaliyah Turner was second in the long jump and Carlee Appling was fifth. Nora Turner was fifth in the triple jump.

 

Amber Watkins was second in discus and third in shot put. Zy Edwards won shot and was third in discus. Aariana Bell was second in shot and Abby Jones was fourth in discus.

 

Elin Turner was second and Paris Crowder was third in the 100 hurdles. Turner, Emily Wisham, Zariah Burgess and Nora Turner won the 4x800 relay.

 

Goddard, Appling, Karman Bermudez and Sydnie Henderson won the 4x200 relay. Crowder, Goddard, Bermudez and Kenzie Henderson won the 4x100 relay.

 

Appling, Sydnie Henderson, Nora Turner and Kenzie Henderson won the 4x400.

 

Mylee Nimmons was second and Wisham was fourth in the 1,600 meters. Sydnie Henderson was second in the 400 meters and Avana Stewart was fourth in the 300 hurdles.

 

Sydnie Henderson won the 800 meters, followed by Elin Turner in second and Wisham in fifth.

 

Bermudez was third in the 200 meters and Nimmons was second in the 3,200.

 

Landon Mallonee won the boys high point trophy for winning the 1,600 meters, finishing second in the 800 and 3,200 meters, and running on the winning 4x800 team and on the fourth-place 4x400 team.

 

He was one of 15 Patriots to advance to sectionals next week.

 

Golf team finishes season at area match

 

Jake Turner and Cole Horsley each shot 87 as the OCHS golf teams finished their seasons at the area tournament at Lane Creek Golf Club in Bogart. Phil Paradise, Baron De Mattei, Sofia Horsley and Avery Kort all competed well, coach Melissa McGarity wrote in an email.

 

Tillman, Crowe receive Positive Athlete award

 

Cory Tillman (cross country) and Ella Crowe (golf) were selected as the Positive Athlete as two of the regional award winners for the East Atlanta Region.

 

The region includes 22 area high schools in Barrow, Clarke, Elbert, Greene, Jackson, Madison, Morgan, Oconee, Oglethorpe and Walton counties.

 

“In addition to excellence on the field, each nominated Positive Athlete was required to show characteristics such as an optimistic attitude, teammate encouragement, servant leadership, heart for others, ability to admit imperfections, giving 100% all the time and realizing the team as more important than the individual,” according to a release.
