Prep Roundup: Last-second field goal drops Patriots to 0-3

Washington-Wilkes kicked a 24-yard field goal on the last play of the game to defeat Oglethorpe County 20-17 at Patriot Stadium Friday night.

The Patriots, who led 17-10 with 5:43 remaining in the game, fell to 0-3 heading into a game at Laney in Augusta at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

“It was a heartbreaker last Friday,” OCHS coach Mike Holland said. “To be winning with 5 minutes left and to let it slip away is tough. I hate it for our seniors who continue to show tremendous grit and determination. We will keep chopping wood and do everything we can to get on track.”

Darius Heard started at quarterback and led the Patriots with 116 yards and two touchdowns. His 53-yard scoring run gave OCHS a 17-10 lead.

Dalton Hilley led the Patriots with 11 tackles. Clint Graham and O’Maury Huggs each had two tackles, two for loss.

Matthew Martin had a sack and Braxton Edmonson kicked a 39-yard field goal.

Laney is 2-1 with victories over Hephzibah and Putnam County.

“(Laney is) a physical football team with good size and speed,” Holland said. “I think we have a great game plan in place and we are excited for the opportunity to go play a quality team as we get ready to open region play in two weeks.”
