Oglethorpe County plans to appeal its placement in Region 8-A Division I, co-athletic director Mike Holland said Tuesday.

OCHS was moved to Region 8-A Division I during the Georgia High School Association reclassification on Nov. 9.

Region 8-A Division I includes several area schools, such as Athens Academy, Athens Christian, Commerce and Elbert County, but also schools farther away, including Rabun County, Providence Christian (Lilburn) and Wesleyan (Peachtree Corners).

Holland said school administrators would rather be in the new Region 4-A Division I, which will include Social Circle and Jasper County. They currently share Region 5-A Division I with Oglethorpe County and Prince Avenue Christian.

“We think, overall, it will be a better fit for us,” Holland said.

Holland and wrestling/track coach Tim Stoudenmire will make the appeal at the GHSA on Thursday. OCHS should have a decision that same day.

The new Region 4-A Division I will also include Lamar County, Landmark Christian (Fairburn), McNair (Atlanta), Putnam County and Towers (Decatur), among others.

The GHSA reclassifies its schools every two years. The new classification will start next fall and extend to 2026.

Several teammates were selected to the all-region team. They include offensive linemen Brock Barrett and Reid Coley, receiver Darius Heard, defensive back Jordan Johnson, defensive lineman Ashton Sexton and linebacker Quentin Nash.

Elbert County ended Oglethorpe County’s season with a 34-27 victory in the first round of the Class A Division I playoffs on Friday.
