Prep Roundup: OCMS volleyball team repeats as league champs

The Oglethorpe County Middle School volleyball team defeated Lake Oconee Academy, Loganville Christian Academy and Prince Avenue Christian to win the Athens Area Middle School volleyball league for the second consecutive year last Saturday.

The team received a trophy and the players received medals for the victory.

In matches from earlier this month, the OCMS A- and B-teams each defeated Lake Oconee Academy on Sept. 11 and Westminster Christian on Sept. 16.

The OCMS football team, which is coached by Steve Irwin, defeated Commerce 48-6 to improve to 6-0 on Sept. 18. The Patriots were scheduled to play Apalachee on Sept. 25 (after The Echo’s deadline) for the opportunity to finish undefeated this season.

The OCMS softball team finished its season with three consecutive losses. The Patriots lost to Athens Christian 13-7 on Sept. 10, Prince Avenue 11-3 on Sept. 17 and Loganville Christian 14-4 in the playoffs on Sept. 23.

Football team faces Athens Academy

The Patriots fell to 0-5, 0-1 in Region 8-A Division I with a 46-13 loss to Elbert County at Patriot Stadium last Friday.

Defensively, Clint Graham had 11 tackles, Matthew Martin had four tackles and forced and recovered a fumble, Keagan Moates had seven tackles, and C.J. Whitlock finished with six tackles.

“Athens Academy is another great team,” OCHS coach Mike Holland said. “Our region is very competitive, top to bottom. They have the (Class) A D1 leading receiver, but Jordan Johnson and Darius Heard in the secondary are excited for the challenge to line up against one of the top receivers in the state.”

Athens Academy’s Keyon Standifer, a sophomore receiver, has 28 catches for 660 yards and 10 touchdowns this season.

The Spartans are 5-0 and 1-0 in the region after last week’s 29-28 win over Commerce.

OCHS is off Oct. 4, the week after playing Athens Academy, and then finishes the regular season with four consecutive games.

The Patriots go to Rabun County (4-1, 1-0 in Region 8-A Division I) on Oct. 11, host Commerce (2-3, 0-1) on Oct. 18, travel to Providence Christian (1-3, 0-0) on Oct. 25 and host Banks County (0-5, 0-1) on Nov. 1.
