Prep Roundup: Patriots, Lady Pats play for region titles

Javaun Pittard scored 17 points and had nine rebounds to lead Oglethorpe County to a 53-42 victory over Prince Avenue on Tuesday to advance to the final of the Region 5-A Division I tournament at Jasper County.

 

The Patriots (19-6), the No. 1 seed for the tournament, will play Jasper County for the region title at 8:30 p.m. Friday. That game also will be at Jasper County.


In addition to the region title, the game is for seeding purposes for the Class A Division I state tournament.

 

Cole Appling added 14 points for OCHS, which is No. 9 in the GHSA state rankings.

 

Pittard and teammate Jaelin Lumpkin were selected as the 5-A Division I co-players of the year, and Larry Brown was selected as the region coach of the year.


Appling was selected first-team all-region, Ty Burgess was selected to the second team and Jake Turner was selected honorable mention.


Lumpkin and Burgess were selected to the all-region defensive team.

 

In the final regular-season game last Friday, Pittard scored 18 points and had nine rebounds to lead OCHS to a 51-43 victory over Social Circle. Lumpkin added 13 points and Appling scored 12 points.

 

Lady Patriots roll in region tourney

 

Denim Goddard scored 23 points as the Lady Patriots defeated Jasper County 67-38 in the first round of the Region 5-A Division I tournament on Tuesday.

 

The Lady Patriots (22-2), the No. 1 seed for the tournament, will play Prince Avenue at 7 p.m. Friday for the region championship. That game also will be at Jasper County.

 

In addition to the region title, the game is for seeding purposes for the Class A Division I state tournament.

 

Aariana Bell scored 19 points, had eight rebounds and five assists, and Kenzie Henderson added 11 points, nine rebounds and eight steals for the Lady Patriots, who are No. 4 in the GHSA state rankings.

 

In the final regular-season game last Friday, Goddard scored 27 points and had eight steals as the Lady Patriots wrapped up the regular season with a 62-32 victory over Social Circle. Elin Turner scored 10 points and Aariana Bell added seven points and seven rebounds.

 

 

OCHS soccer drops openers to Madison

 

The Madison County girls soccer team defeated Oglethorpe County 5-0 on Friday and the OCHS boys lost 1-0 in the season opener for both teams on Friday.

 

The girls game was “much more competitive” than the score indicates, coach Erich Forschler said. The boys “looked much improved from the scrimmage two weeks earlier,” he added. 

 

 

Baseball rained out on Monday

 

The OCHS baseball team’s opener against Clarke Central was rained out on Monday. No make up date has been set.
