Oglethorpe County’s state ranked basketball teams continued their hot starts during the Thanksgiving break.

 

The Patriots (3-0) are No. 1 in the MaxPreps Class A Division I ranking, No. 7 in the GHSA Top 10 and No. 9 in Score Atlanta ranking.

 

They defeated Athens Academy 50-43 in the Billy Wade Classic at Clarke Central on Nov. 21 and then knocked off Monsignor Donovan 79-61 behind Javaun Pittard’s 29 points and 12 rebounds on Nov. 25.

 

Pittard, who surpassed 1,000 career points in the season-opening victory over Southwest Atlanta Christian, is Oglethorpe County’s leading scorer with 23.6 points a game. 

 

He had 15 in the victory over Athens Academy, followed by Cole Appling’s 10 points.

 

Jaelin Lumpkin scored 17 points and Ty Burgess added 15 points in the win over Monsignor Donovan.

 

The OCHS girls team is 2-0 after Denim Goddard scored 23 points and had eight rebounds and seven assists to lead the Lady Patriots to a 76-52 victory over Greene County in the Billy Wade Classic on Nov. 21.

 

Kenzie Henderson added 23 points and 12 rebounds, and Aariana Bell had 15 points and seven assists.

 

The Lady Patriots are No. 5 in the GHSA Class A Division I Top 10 and No. 7 in the Score Atlanta Top 10. 

 

All four OCHS basketball teams, including the junior varsity squads, will be in action at Elbert County on Saturday, Dec. 2. 

 

The JV girls will play at 10 a.m., followed by the JV boys at 11:30 p.m. The varsity girls will play at 1 p.m., followed by the varsity boys at 2:30 p.m.

 

Wrestling team finishes strong in tourneys

The Oglethorpe County wrestling team had two top three finishes in tournaments last week.

 

The Patriots were second at the 22-team Battle at the Briar Patch at Putnam County on Nov. 21. 

 

They then finished 4-1 and placed third at the Franklin County Duals on Nov. 22.

 

The Patriots defeated Harlem, Sequoyah, Winder-Barrow and East Hall, and lost to West Oak, South Carolina, in that tournament.
