Oglethorpe County football coach Mike Holland said the Patriots are using the off week to work on fundamentals and get healthy to prepare for the remainder of the season.
OCHS is coming off a 47-27 loss at Athens Academy on Saturday. The game was moved from Friday because of weather.
Athens Academy (6-0, 2-0 in Region 8-A Division I) led 20-13 at halftime, but pulled away in the second half.
“Athens Academy was very explosive,” OCHS coach Mike Holland said. “We played tough in the first half. We just couldn’t hang on.”
Payton Prince led the Patriots with 196 yards rushing and two touchdowns, Darius Heard had 86 yards and a touchdown, and Jordan Johnson rushed for 83 yards and another score.
Clint Graham had 11 tackles and forced a fumble, Matthew Martin had seven tackles, and O’Maury Huggs had five tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack.
The Patriots (0-6, 0-2) play at Rabun County on Oct. 11 and return home for a game against Commerce on Oct. 18.
Tillman, Henderson shine in meets
Corey Tillman was Oglethorpe County’s top finisher with a time of 19 minutes at the Winder-Barrow Invitational on Sept. 28.
He was followed by Ethan McLean (19:34) and Luke Holbrooks (19:43).
Sydnie Henderson won the girls race with a time of 20:33, followed by Elin Turner (23:51) and Abby Whitney (24:43).
OCMS football finishes undefeated, other OCMS sports
The OCMS football team finished its season at 6-0 after its game against Apalachee was canceled on Sept. 25.
In cross country, Meadow Nimmons was OCMS’ top girls finisher and Jonah Burke was OCMS’ top boys finisher at the Oconee Middle School Braves Open Invitational on Sept. 30.
The cross country team will compete in Milledgeville on Saturday, Oct. 5.
Tryouts for the OCMS girls basketball team will be held Oct. 9-10 and tryouts for OCMS basketball cheerleading is Oct. 16-17.
Any student who wishes to try out must have a parental permission form and current physical on file with the OCMS clinic before being allowed to participate.
