Williams’ rehab focus leads to monthly honor

Hayden Williams, a junior receiver and defensive back on the Oglethorpe County football team who is recovering from a complete ACL tear, was selected as the Piedmont Orthopedics and Sports Medicine of Athens Athlete of the Month.

Williams, who was selected as a team captain for this season, suffered the non-contact pivot injury in a game last September. Dr. Rob Willson performed reconstructive surgery.

“Hayden’s commitment to his recovery was remarkable from Day 1,” physical therapist Justin Stewart said in a release from Piedmont Athens Regional. “He consistently followed every part of his rehabilitation plan and was determined to return stronger than before. In fact, one of the biggest challenges for our team was reminding him not to rush the process. His work ethic, positive attitude and willingness to do everything asked of him played a major role in his successful recovery.”

After surgery, Williams began a comprehensive rehabilitation program.

He progressed from using crutches to regaining independence with daily activities in the first months.

Williams then started strength training before beginning to jog. He was cleared for football-specific agility training at nine months.

“Recovery from ACL reconstruction typically takes eight to 10 months and can even extend beyond a year, depending on the athlete and sport,” Stewart said. “Throughout the entire rehab process, Hayden remained focused on his long-term goal of returning to the football field safely. We’re excited that he’s back on the field for his junior season.”
