Thumbs up and down   These are busy times. The end of the school year always jams the calendar with activities. But as students, faculty, administrators and staff scatter for the summer, we want to pay tribute to them for another successful year.
My Augusta friends, Abram and Cookie Serotta, sent me three red and black bow ties. The UGA grads loved Amos and Andy, too. This photo was taken in my office. Above my head is a Jack Davis print that Bulldog great Lindsay Scott autographed, along with his 1980 national championship teammates.

Opinion Column: The ‘Boys’ are back together

In human years, Andy was 105.   The silver-haired schnauzer was 22 pounds of energy and joy.   For 15 years, Andy knew he was special. Spoiled, perhaps, but special.    Andy came in a package with his charcoal-gray brother, Amos.    I went to buy a single pup, but came home with two.

Opinion Column: Picking oranges plucks story from Great Depression

Circa 1935.   Soup kitchens.   Bread lines.   Unemployment almost 25%.   The Great Depression had America’s stomach gnawing on its backbone. Jobs were hard to come by, but the two youthful brothers always found work.

Opinion Column: Candidates ignore the environment

If you wish the Nov. 8 election was over, raise your hand.   Careful.   Don’t throw your shoulder out of joint.   The only ones not eager to see the bickering and backbiting in the rearview mirror are the TV stations that are profiting from the gold rush of mudslinging advertising.

Editorial: Maybe, just maybe

If you were to poll residents of Oglethorpe County about what the community needs most, the list could be varied.   But for certain, universal broadband would be at the top, or very close. Reliable internet is a necessity, especially for students, businesses and work-from-home residents.

Opinion Column: Bennett can’t hide his gridiron DNA

Viewers saw it on TV. Maybe you did.    I didn’t see Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett IV throwing up during the South Carolina game.   Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart knew about it, but No. 13 wasn’t about to bench himself. He’s a Bennett. Stetson IV is a competitor.
Stetson Bennett IV never doubted where he wanted to be a college quarterback. Growing up in South Georgia, his heart was set on UGA, as family photos confirm. (Submitted Photo/Bennett Family)

Opinion Column: Stetson scores one for dreamers

Long before he could shake a red and black pompom, Stetson Bennett IV was destined to be a Georgia Bulldog.     Three days before the future quarterback was born in 1997, his mom was sitting in Sanford Stadium, shaking her red and black pompom. Both of No.

The Echo's Opinion: You can be a reporter

Geographically, Oglethorpe County is one of the largest counties in Georgia. It’s a long drive from Vesta to Philomath or from Salem to Smithonia. And as much as your newspaper would like to be everywhere — all the time — we can’t.
