***Before the fireworks and festivities, there was something else that was celebrated just as purposeful — a holiday of service. Athens Area Pediatric Dentistry’s 3rd annual Free Dental Day reminded us that giving back is its own kind of celebration.

Athens Area Pediatric Dentistry, led by Dr. John Timothy Hansford Jr. hosted their “3rd of July” Free Dental Day. On this day, Dr. Hansford and his team provided free dental care, including anesthesia and sedation, to children in need. While the 4th of July is celebrated as a day of independence, why not create another celebration; one that gives to children who face challenges in accessing dental care?

This event was also an amazing opportunity for volunteers interested in careers related to dentistry, anesthesiology, and special needs care. Dental Minority Dawgs, a pre-dental organization at UGA, brought pre-dental students out to volunteer alongside Dr. Hansford.

Candace Denton, a second-year pre-dental student says “Watching Dr. Hansford provide care while also breaking down the science behind each procedure was inspirational. Not only did he serve the greater Athens community, but he took the time to welcome and educate future dental professionals.”

Sophia Zahed, also a second-year pre dental student, added, “Being able to have a positive impact on someone’s experience is what I strive for. This opportunity allowed me to see the compassion from him towards the patients and families. I truly feel that this event has made a big impact on those in need.”

Overall, the 3rd annual “3rd of July” event was another success both for the community, patients, staff, and student volunteers. Dr. Hansford’s ability to provide efficient, compassionate care to his patients while also teaching and guiding the next generation of future dentists is remarkable.

Looking ahead, we are excited for the next Free Dental Day event: the annual “Spooktacular Smiles coming this Halloween. We are excited to see the continued impact of his work and another successful event.

Together, they enjoy providing opportunities like this for pre-dental students.
