The Echo's Opinion: Positive signs

If you haven’t noticed, there are positive signs in our community.   Look around.   If you’re traveling on Highway 78 from Athens-Clarke County into Crawford, you’re welcomed by a new mural on the west wall of soon-to-open Crawford Pizza.

Stricklands take over Ace Hardware

The Ace Hardware Stores in Crawford and Colbert will transition to new owners Tripp Strickland and his father George Strickland, who live in Danielsville.    The current owners, Leisa and Tony Coyne, were ready to sell the business, Strickland said. The Coynes couldn’t be reached for comment.

Shedd puts skills to work in own business

Many people know Lynn Shedd as Oglethorpe County’s local handyman, but some know him as a member of the family.   Shedd’s stepdaughter’s fiance works alongside him on certain projects.    “He calls me ‘Pop.’ We get along great,” Lynn Shedd said.

Wilson’s new business focuses on rural land

Larry Willis and his family are avid deer hunters. He often leases deer hunting property to hunt on with his two sons and two grandchildren.   Last year, Willis decided it was time to purchase his own hunting property with the help of Phil Wilson, a realtor in Oglethorpe County.

Golden pantry stores to be remodeled

Golden Pantry has started the process to remodel 32 of its stores throughout Georgia, including the two locations in Oglethorpe County.

Zoning board approves coffee shop, deer processing plant

Oglethorpe County is one step closer to having a new coffee shop.   Amy Delfin-Torres’ plan to open a coffee shop at 9 Callaway Road was approved by the zoning board on Monday night.

Lexington property owner granted extension

Rick Hawkins was granted a 45-day extension to show compliance with ordinance violations for his five properties on Main Street in downtown Lexington.   He has until March 1 or a new date will be set for him to appear in municipal court. The original court date was set for Jan.

Restaurant might replace antique mall

The Lexington Antique Mall will shut its doors after a quarter-century in business.    “After 25 years, the antique business has changed quite a bit,” owner Ronnie Boggs said. “The younger generation … doesn't have the appreciation for the older antiques.
