OCPS teachers share love of the job

The Oglethorpe County School System welcomed 28 new educators this year — 17 of whom teach at Oglethorpe County Primary School. The Oglethorpe Echo spoke with teachers and staff at OCPS about their goals for the school year and passion for teaching in Oglethorpe County.

New school plans are in the works

The Oglethorpe County School System met with an architect this week to begin to plan the new elementary school that will serve students in kindergarten through fifth grade.    The district’s goal is to complete the school by the start of the 2024 school year.

News Roundup: Squirrel hunting season opens in Georgia on Monday

Squirrel season in Georgia begins Monday, Aug. 15 and continues through Feb. 28, 2022.    Hunters can pursue both gray and fox squirrels, and the maximum daily bag limit is 12 per hunter.    Some of the Wildlife Management Areas have a limit on the harvest of fox squirrels.

Back to class

Many parents and caretakers felt a mix of nervousness and excitement this week as they sent their children to experience the first day of school on Monday.

Community Day more than just fun, games

Oglethorpe County schools received enough COVID-19 government funding last year to cover the cost of school supplies for public school students. In response, the Oglethorpe Community Day Committee decided to use the money it raised to provide approximately 300 students with free backpacks.

Summer vacation nears end

Macie Carter said she plans to provide an enriched educational experience for her Oglethorpe County Elementary School students this year.   “Last year — our team — we kind of revamped our English language arts curriculum,” Carter said.

Security plan designed to keep children safe

Oglethorpe County parent Chris Busbin is apprehensive about his two children attending school this year.   “It makes me a little nervous with everything that's happened, you know, across the country,” Busbin said. “Because we're in a small town. Just like they were in Texas.

Fines will help pay for bathroom damage

Oglethorpe County School System officials brought charges against two individuals who defaced bathrooms at the middle school last semester.    Their fines will compensate for the costs of repairing the damage, which included broken soap and paper towel dispensers.
