Strong turnout for new youth track program

Oglethorpe County’s new youth rec track and field team is off to a fast start with over 60 participants in its first year. Kids ages 6 to 15 participate in weekly practices at Oglethorpe County High School and compete in meets, usually on weekends.

Freeman makes impact in return to alma mater

George Gresham remembers coaching Maurice Freeman on the Oglethorpe County track and field team over a decade ago. So, when Freeman returned to Oglethorpe County, after a track career at the University of Georgia, Gresham was quite pleased.   “He came back,” Gresham said.

Experienced coaches ready to guide track teams

Oglethorpe County’s track and field teams will need to rely on more than being coached by alumni to stand atop the podium at the end of the season. Ultimately, the both teams’ success will hinge on the athletes’ performances.

Track replacement underway at OCHS

The Oglethorpe County High School track is getting a facelift.   Repairs have started on the track, which had cracked, formed holes and had bubbled up in places, making it impossible to use several lanes for practice and meets.

Junior Olympic team builds on county’s track tradition

Oglethorpe County’s strength in track and field continues.   Seven youth — aged 18 and younger — from Oglethorpe County were selected to participate in the AAU Junior Olympics.

Prince finishes strong at Class A track meet

Oglethorpe County native Savanna Prince capped her high school track career with strong performances at the GHSA Class A Division 1 State Meet.   Prince, who lives in Smithonia and recently graduated from Athens Christian School, helped the Lady Golden Eagles win the state title in May.

On the run: Stoudenmire finds success at UNG

Chris England uses several words to describe Oglethorpe County grad Ella Stoudenmire. They include “kind,” “respectful,” “a great student” and “incredible young lady.”    “She is very quiet,” said England, head coach of the University of North Georgia’s track and field and cross country teams.

State champs again

If Oglethorpe County High School girls track coach Tim Stoudenmire had one word to describe this year’s team, it would be “complete.

Track teams head to Class AA meet

The OCHS boys track team qualified athletes in 14 of 18 events for the Class AA state track meet. The girls team qualified athletes in 17 of 18 events. Both teams will compete in the meet at Kinnett Stadium in Columbus on May 12-14.
