Levine: Lockdown drills 'successful'

Superintendent Beverley Levine called Tuesday’s lockdown drills “successful” at the school board meeting that night.   Levine said the last lockdown drill the school system conducted was before the COVID-19 pandemic, so another drill was needed at all four of the county’s schools.

Board approves millage rate hike

The Oglethorpe County Board of Education approved a new millage rate for fiscal year 2023 during its meeting on Tuesday.   After holding three public hearings, the board unanimously voted to accept a 16.65 millage rate for fiscal year 2023.

New school plans are in the works

The Oglethorpe County School System met with an architect this week to begin to plan the new elementary school that will serve students in kindergarten through fifth grade.    The district’s goal is to complete the school by the start of the 2024 school year.

Many parents and caretakers felt a mix of nervousness and excitement this week as they sent their children to experience the first day of school on Monday.

BOE presents lower millage rate; vote set for Aug. 29

The Board of Education presented a millage rate at 16.65, marking a 1.75-mill rollback from the 2022 rate and submitted a five-year property tax digest during its meeting on Tuesday.   The board will vote to approve a final millage rate at a called BOE meeting at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 29.

County property taxes on the rise

Property values increased 20% for the average Oglethorpe County household this year, said Deputy Chief Appraiser Kim Knudsen of the Tax Assessor’s Office.
