Hunters take 3,650 deer from county this season

Oglethorpe County has once again solidified its place as one of Georgia’s top counties for deer hunting, ranking fifth for total deer harvested in 2024-25.

Rec night gives taste of OCHS soccer experience

  Cassandra Fabrizio’s oldest kids, Ryley and Wyatt, dream of being soccer phenoms. While playing on Oglethorpe County rec teams, their parents want them to be exposed to a higher level of play to prepare for what’s to come.

Strong turnout for new youth track program

Oglethorpe County’s new youth rec track and field team is off to a fast start with over 60 participants in its first year. Kids ages 6 to 15 participate in weekly practices at Oglethorpe County High School and compete in meets, usually on weekends.

Sports gear swap helps parents save

Children outgrow things quickly, from clothes to sports equipment.    Tina White knows this, so she created an event called The Great Spring Sport Equipment Swap, which was held at the Oglethorpe County Recreation Department last Saturday.

The rise of pickleball: Oglethorpe County embraces sport

The pickleball league meets at 9 a.m. Monday and Thursday, and on Tuesday after line dancing class at the Oglethorpe County Rec Department. It is free to join.

When Michael White became director of the Oglethorpe County Recreation Department in 2017, he was only starting to see growth in youth sports.   “When I (came) here five years ago,” he said, “I think we had 19 basketball teams. From then to now, I’ve got 31 teams.

WATCH: County residents are lining up for new dance class

 

The Oglethorpe County Recreation Department began hosting a line dancing class in an effort to provide more community engagement activities to the public. Dancers participate in basic line routines like the "Cupid Shuffle" and the "Electric Slide" before moving on to more traditional line dances. No cowboy hats, boots or coveralls are necessary at this laidback dance class, which takes place on Tuesday mornings from 9 to 10 a.m.
