OCHS works to boost AP course offerings

Advanced Placement classes are a key part of the college application season. The topic has also surfaced in recent community listening sessions, where parents and students said they would like to see more AP options at the high school.

Boone the one-of-a-kind dog: Family’s best friend provides legacy of hunting, love and entrepreneurship

Deer blood in dog kibble is part of the process of turning a puppy into a tracking dog, but Boone, a catahoula leopard dog, didn’t need it. When Boone joined Brooke Holcombe’s life in 2019, he was meant to be a companion, at most a guard dog.

Feral hogs impact county yards, land

Rebecca Wood trudged through her yard late last month to inspect her uprooted grass. She pointed to her beloved flower bed, home to tall, blooming perennials and annuals, and let out an aggravated sigh.“It’s just like a rototiller went through there,” Wood said. “I’m super pissed off about that.

OCHS boys basketball focuses on culture

While the Oglethorpe County boys basketball team record isn’t what he hoped, sitting at 1-12 overall and 1-5 in Region 8-A Division I, coach Carlos Strong has faith in his team.  He said he believes they can finish well and build a new culture.

Man of steel: Nation celebrates 67 years with same company

Ora Nation left Oglethorpe County at age 18 to find a job in Atlanta and “strike it rich.”    There, he began his first job at Rainwater Construction as a steel erector, assembling the framework of steel buildings. Nation was excited to receive a wage of 75 cents an hour, a fair rate in 1957.

Sports gear swap helps parents save

Children outgrow things quickly, from clothes to sports equipment.    Tina White knows this, so she created an event called The Great Spring Sport Equipment Swap, which was held at the Oglethorpe County Recreation Department last Saturday.
Mobile cranes and tow trucks were called in to remove the tractor-trailer that overturned and blocked Saxon Mattox Road on Monday morning. Another truck blocked Lexington-Carlton Road later that day.

Truck accidents plague county

Tractor-trailers and their drivers are having a tough time in Oglethorpe County. Two 18-wheelers overturned on Monday — one of them on Saxon Mattox Road — and a third overturned at the same spot on Tuesday night.

Church meets needs with food pantry

Every second Monday of the month, 20-40 volunteers greet families who line the block in their cars around Lexington Baptist Church. In just one day, the group will disperse around 150 boxes to provide more than 500 people with necessary food supplies.
